Time: The camp starts at 10am, parents should aim to get their kids to the stadium around 9am to ensure they are on the courts on time.

Amazing news this morning as Steven Adams’ Camps has announced that they, with the generous support of their friends at Meadow Fresh, are bringing a camp to ILT Stadium Southland , Invercargill.

Be sure to like and follow the Meadow Fresh Facebook page. They are running a ticket give away promotion for each of the three camps.

It is important to note that the tickets to the camps are free and there are limited numbers. While this is awesome for the kids, it affects the distribution of tickets, which will be limited to 2 per person.

We are very excited in SBA headquarters as we go through the planning stages and begin the process for ticket application and allocation. We will be informing you all about this tomorrow with a view to you being able to register for tickets. Tickets initially will be offered to those children who have an affiliation with Southland Basketball by playing in one of our competitions or attending one of our programmes in the last 9 months – this includes 2018 miniball.

Tickets will also be offered to the Queenstown and Eastern Southland areas – these tickets will be administered by these local bodies.

The SBA is offering a training course for people who would like to become basketball referees. This course is aimed at beginner referees who do not necessarily have to have any basketball experience. Some knowledge of the game is of course helpful.

There is no cost for this training and all participants will be provided with all training materials, and once active, a whistle and a refereeing shirt. Beginner referees will be supported in an encouraging, protected manner and will have the opportunity to develop their skills and move through the refereeing levels as set by the SBA and BBNZ

PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT DRAW: SATURDAY 13 & SUNDAY 14 APRIL 2019

Junior Tall Black assistant coach Leyton Haddleton has been appointed as Southland Basketball’s new Development Officer.

Haddleton who will take up the role on April 1 , will be part of the national under-19 men’s coaching squad for a fifth year when the team travels to Greece for the World Championships in June.

However, before then he will be focused on building on the great work Southland Basketball has put in place over recent years locally.

“The opportunity to look after the emerging talent down south across a varied age groups, boys and girls is the attraction. I’ve also previously worked with Judd Flavell at the NZ Breakers when I was team manger (2015-16) and so getting to work alongside Juddy again is a nice bonus,” Haddleton said.

“It’s exciting times to be part of the sport which is growing so rapidly. I think at a basic level, you just need a ball and hoop and you can entertain yourself for hours on end, watching highlights on YouTube and then trying to emulate them. It’s an easy thing to do with your mates and generally you can get some friends together at a social or competitive grade.”

“I love showing what basketball can bring in general life skills, the commitment you need to be part of a team and how that transcends into everyday life. That’s what Southland does so well with the Sharks, giving back to the community and that really excites me about coming down to Southland,” he said.

“I really want to create that pathway for our kids through our representative programmes to see Southlanders playing for the Sharks or in national programmes and, if they choose to, look at options in America to use basketball to get an education and as a vehicle to better their lives.”

“That’s an elite pathway I know, but if we can show its possible then we will show we are one of the most associations in the country and that should be our focus, Haddleton said.

I am sure that Leyton is going to add his own personality and ideas to our existing initiatives and expand on the great work that his predecessor , Dan Peck, has put in place. We are really looking forward to getting Leyton here and getting him started “

Age Groups

All trialists must be under the age of the age group they are trialing for as of the end of December 2019. For example, if you are turning 15 in 2019 you will be eligible for the Under 17 age group.

Standing for those grades that are having semi-finals this week have been determined on competition points. Please note that for grades where multiple teams are on equal competition points at the end of their round robin, standings are determined based on the below.

- Who won when those teams played each other

- If equal win/loss we then go on points for and against when those teams played each other

- If still tied, points for and against for the overall competition

It is important to note that SportsTG Ladders only list based on competition points and then overall for/against points. It does not rank based on the above when teams are on equal competition points.

SBA are really grateful to have been given the opportunity to pre-purchase (prior to public release on 16 July) 60 tickets for Southland players to attend the Steven Adams Camp in Dunedin on Wednesday 22 August.

These tickets are available for players aged 8-17 who are affiliated to SBA i.e. have played in an SBA competition over the past 12 months, with a limit of three per family.

Should these tickets sell out quickly prior to 16 July we may be able to source more so a waiting list will be kept.

Tickets can be secured either by phoning the SBA office 03 211 2254 (and internet banking) or by calling into the office at ILT Stadium Southland with payment (cash or cheque only). Payment must be made within two days of purchase.

What a fantastic opportunity to meet the NZ NBA legend and learn some great skills at the same time!

SBA are getting wheelchair basketball rolling in 2018 with a short six week social competition. Wheelchair basketball is a sport that everyone can play - no experience necessary...this league is a fun and social way to get the sport back rolling in the region.

Dates: Mondays - 26 March; 9, 16, 23 & 30 April; 7 May

Venue: ILT Stadium Southland

Cost: $280 team registration fee

There are only six teams in this competition and we already have three pre-registered.

Our friends at Auckland University of Technology and Drug Free Sport New Zealand are capturing the thoughts of 13-18-year-old athletes throughout NZ on supplement use and doping in sport. The findings will be used to make sport better for everyone by developing a programme, which prevents doping in sport for the next generation of NZ athletes. It is really important that we hear the thoughts of as many NZ basketball athletes as possible! All data obtained through this questionnaire will be anonymous but will make a real contribution to our understanding of what shapes the intentions of our youth to use banned substances.
